Our History
Much of the church’s early documented history has been lost. The information provided below was accumulated from a few existing documents and noted recollections of members. These notes reflect the long standing dedication and faith of the congregation known as Rock Prairie Baptist Church.

Rock Prairie Baptist Church was established in September of 1883 in the Hollis Community with the assistance of elders E.J. Smith, C.B Hollis, and J.R. Horn. The original building was destroyed by a storm sometime in 1896 and a new building was erected in February 1897. Hollis eventually became a part of North Zulch which had been established in 1907 when
citizens of Zulch, known in current times as Willowhole, moved north to relocate along the newly constructed Trinity and Brazos Valley Railway west of Hollis.
Another building was built in 1939 and over the years North Zulch experienced periods of decline. RPBC actually dissolved at one point due to the population decline in the area. In 1979 or 1980 a group of twelve gathered in faith to discuss reopening and activating services in the old church building. The building was in need of repairs and Brother Paul Eaton of First Baptist Church in North Zulch, assisted the congregation with re-establishing the church and the necessary repairs were made with the help of an area association and members. Bro. Eaton provided pastoral services by splitting his time between both churches.

Eventually attendance grew and it became evident a Sunday school building was needed and was built for that purpose, also containing a kitchen and restrooms. Eventually the required pastoral duties also grew to the point a full time pastor was needed. With no housing available in the area for a pastor, a parsonage was built in 1986 debt free due to the generosity local residents.
In 1991 it was discovered that the old building foundation was deteriorating and that it would be more feasible to build a new building. The project encountered many obstacles along the way, and each time God provided the necessary funds, materials, furnishings, and people to complete the work. The existing building was dedicated in a special service on March 29, 1992. The 1939 building was eventually torn down

and replaced with a new Education building supplying dedicated space for classrooms as well as storage and additional restrooms. The building that had been providing classroom space was then converted into a Fellowship Hall, which was later expanded to its current size in 2014.

Rock Prairie Baptist Church has persisted with God’s blessing of abundance. From a start of only twelve people with a desire to worship in their own community, the church has continued in belief that this church was, and still is God’s plan to be a church with longstanding faith and service to its community.
